What is the SD Reply Center scam?
Postcards from SD Reply Center are sent out to senior citizens, informing them that they may be eligible for a special Medicare program to pay for their final expenses. The cards don’t mention the name of the insurer or the sender.
The recipients are asked to mail back postage-paid cards to SD Reply Center, PO Box 2528, Rockwall TX 75087-9891. They need to fill in some basic personal information including their and their spouse’s name, ages, and phone number.
Although the mailers resemble government documents, they don’t come from Medicare. There is no federal or state-run program that offers this kind of benefit.
In fact, federal and state laws forbid insurers from soliciting seniors unless they ask for information. So instead, other companies are asked to mail the postcards on their behalf.
In this case, it’s a division of Senior Direct called TargetLeads who is contracted to distribute mail and generate leads for licensed agents in your state.
What happens when you send the card back?
If you reply to a mailer, you can expect to get a phone call from one or more insurance agents who will try to sell you final expense life insurance policies.
In general, you should be careful about sending back anonymous postcards. As you don’t have the name of the insurance agency that will contact you, there is no way for you to verify their policies in advance.
What should you do if you want life insurance but no salesperson?
Instead of sending a postcard back to an anonymous source, you should find a reliable insurance agency in your state who can give you more information about funeral expense life insurance.
It’s very important that you choose an agency that represents more than one insurance carrier because they will be able to help you find the best deal.
