It is challenging to help guide your decision to stay with Wilco Life Insurance Company or on a fair comparison of Wilco and CNO having excellent products, considering their lack of marketing information and difficulty finding a website.

CNO Financial sold Wilco Life in 2014 to Wilton Re, a leading provider of in-force and reinsurance solutions in the North American life insurance industry located in Norwalk, Connecticut. Thus Wilco Life has been a subsidiary now of Wilton Re since Feb 20, 2021.

Whole life insurance will last until maximum age 121 as long as you continue paying your monthly premium because it is a permanent life policy. You can many times borrow a cash value against your policy like a loan.

Warnings

Reference January 2020 Class Action Suit Filed

In Anderson v. Wilco Life Insurance Co., the plaintiff filed in state court a putative class action for breach of contract and the implied duty of good faith and fair dealing, alleging that the defendant insurance company overcharged her and putative class members for life insurance premiums. In addition to seeking money damages for the overpayment of allegedly exorbitant premiums, the plaintiff sought declaratory and injunctive relief that would require the defendant to reverse past premium rate increases and reinstate all life insurance policies that were surrendered or had lapsed due to the increases. The defendant timely removed the matter to federal court under CAFA. To establish CAFA’s $5 million amount-in-controversy requirement, the defendant presented evidence that 581 insurance policies subject to the putative class action had lapsed or had been surrendered during the relevant time, and the aggregate face value of the 581 policies was $75 million.

Will We Still Be Covered by Wilco Life

State Insurance departments regulate and monitor Insurance to primarily protect policyholders from the risk of financial distress.

State Governments protect policyholders if the company goes out of business with state insurance regulators who monitor life insurance companies’ financial well-being.

When a company is in trouble financially, the commissioner residing in the company’s home state to help in a process the troubled company to regain financial footing. This is dictated by state law and is known as a period of rehabilitation.

If, for some reason, the company can’t be rehabilitated, then it is declared insolvent. The commissioner then asks the state court to order the company to be liquidated.

Your Coverage Protected by Law

Most states follow the NAIC Model Act to provide coverage of at least the amounts below:

(check your state association’s website to confirm your levels in your state)

  • Total of $300,000 in life insurance death benefits
  • Total of $100,000 in cash surrender or withdrawal values for life insurance
  • Total of $250,000 in the present value of annuity benefits, including net cash surrender/withdrawal values
  • Total of $500,000 in major medical or basic hospital, medical and surgical insurance policy benefits
  •  Total of $300,000 in long term care insurance policy benefits

What if the Insurer still can’t pay

If the company still falls short of funds to pay the policyholders, then there are state guaranty associations that will be activated to provide 2 main sources of funding.

  1. Subrogation rights of the company’s assets to proportion out to the policyholders. The assets, many times are large, can pay the covered claims.
  2. Insurers have assessed a share in an amount that is required to meet the associated guaranty claims that are not funded with estate assets based on premium amounts collected in that state.
