Medicare Rules About Contacting You
Medicare and Social Security will never call for any of your personal information. The policy is to first inform you in a letter that comes by U.S. Mail.
A rare call is to Medicare beneficiaries only when they become eligible for Medicare benefits. This call is only to confirm with you, not a call asking for your personal information.
Also, Medicare never comes to your home to ask you any questions and doesn’t try to sell you anything.
And because your Medicare card never expires, definitely do not answer questions if someone says you need to get a new Medicare card.
When you answer your phone, an excellent safe habit is to never give out any of your personal information over the phone anytime ever.
Verify
To not make the caller suspicious, calmly ask them for a name and phone number. Then after the call, immediately call Medicare to make a report.
If this happens, hang up and call 1-800-633-4227. If you need to leave a message, you will at least be aware that a real Medicare representative will call you back to know that you are sure. You can then safely make a report with Medicare.
You may start to get emails that look suspicious, also, after you have gotten a Medicare scam calls.
Remember to properly update Medicare by calling them to be safe.
Robocall Scams
Robocalls are voice pre-recorded voice messages that you hear when you answer the phone call. Do not say anything during this call—just hang up.
Many times your local phone company can block these types of illegal calls. Contact your local phone company for more information.
If you find out they provide a feature, but you feel it costs too much, you can also search for a smartphone app to download that also blocks these types of calls.
Stay Safe
If you get a Medicare Scam call, never feel embarrassed or act rude by hanging up. The indisputable fact of the phone call is for a criminal to steal your personal information, which is identify theft.
These Medicare scams happen to many people. If this happens to you,
make sure that you inform other people in your life because you just might help keep this from happening to them, too.
