In This Article, I’m Going To Talk About High BMI: Facing Circumstances And Overcoming Coverage Limitations

You’re interested in getting life insurance but you have concerns about your high BMI. Your BMI or body mass index is going to get in the way of qualifying for life insurance. You’ll definitely want to read the entirety of this article.

My goal as a life insurance agent is to explain exactly what types of circumstances you have to face when applying. And how to overcome those limitations for coverage if you happen to have a high BMI.

Today’s Topic Overview:

Why get life insurance with a high body mass index?

The top 5 reasons to purchase a life insurance policy

The main reason to get life insurance if you have a high body mass index is that you love somebody. It may sound a bit cheesy, but there it is. I teach new insurance agents in the business that the biggest reason why people buy life insurance is as an act of love.

Whether you have high BMI or not, you have concerns about people in your life that you love.

You’ve realized that those people would be put under extreme financial stress to pay for your final expenses.

They would be obligated to make economical cutbacks to their lifestyle. They would have to downsize their lives, getting away from the things in life that really matter. That alone is reason enough. Even with a high BMI getting in the way, still look for life insurance to see what your options are.

What’s the truth about getting life insurance with high BMI? I want to be totally upfront with you about what to expect if you have a high BMI and you’re searching for life insurance.

Make sure that you stick with me through this entire section. Regardless of whether or not you like what you hear, there will be options available to you in most circumstances. Stick around to read those so that you know what you can expect.

Find your available insurance options

Most life insurance carriers will rate you up or decline you. This is not across the board. Just because you have a high BMI, you won’t necessarily be declinedBut many life insurance companies operate by height and weight charts. They determine insurability based on minimum and maximum weights corresponding to your height.

Some companies will have more flexibility when it comes to qualifying you for life insurance.

Your options depend on the life insurance company. I want to be totally upfront with you. Say your BMI is extremely high. You have morbid obesity. You may not qualify for a traditional type of life insurance requiring an examination, or a more detailed life insurance plan.

Assuming that your health fits their profile, even with a high BMI, there are definitely other options that you have. You can still qualify for life insurance.

I had a client once who was 5’3″ and 370lb. She took no medication and she was young. We had extreme difficulty in finding any kind of life insurance for her. She was declined by several different life insurance carriers because of her morbid obesity.

She was desperate to find life insurance. I was able to help her to find a life insurance plan that was able to cover her in a unique way. It gave her the kind of satisfaction that she was needing.

Simplified Issue Plan

Simplified issue and guaranteed issue are the last ditch options if all other choices fail. Because of the difficulty in getting somebody approved for life insurance with morbid obesity and high BMI, sometimes the best pivot to use is a simplified issue or guaranteed issue product.

Simplified issue is designed to do minimal underwriting, without exams, in order to determine insurability. I use these products when clients have preexisting health issues such as heart, stroke, and cancer history. Or if they have height or weight discrepancies that mean that other carriers would decline them.

I’m happy to say that I’ve had lots of people with a high BMI who were approved for life insurance using simplified issue products. These products literally do not care about any sort of high BMI issues. Instead what they care about is that there have been no health issues over the past several years.

The client that I mentioned earlier? She was eligible for $25,000 natural death coverage, first-day full coverage, without a waiting period. Despite her high BMI. We were able to qualify her for up to $100,000 in accidental coverage. More, if she wanted it.

The 5 top reasons why people buy guaranteed issue life insurance

1.Bad health
If you suffer from health concerns, like a high BMI, a guaranteed issue life insurance plan is a good purchase decision. Guaranteed issue life insurance provides coverage without any questions being asked. This means that people previously declined may be eligible for guaranteed issue.

2.Final expense coverage
If you aren’t looking for a large amount of coverage, but want just enough to cover burial and final expenses so that your family won’t be responsible for those costs, guaranteed issue is a great option.

3.No questions asked
Probably the most appealing aspect of this type of insurance is that no health questions are asked on the application. It’s as simple as signing your name and you are approved!

4.Can’t cancel due to age or health
Guaranteed issue, unlike some other types of life insurance, will not cancel due to age or health. This is definitely a benefit if you are in poor health or over the age of 60.

5.Rates never go up
If you are on a fixed income, you will find the fixed price of guaranteed issue especially appealing. The rate you pay each month stays the same, no matter what.

Case study examples

Cost of a Mortgage

A middle aged couple recently contacted us at Buy Life Insurance for Burial because they had taken on a 30 year mortgage. They were concerned about the repercussions of either one of them passing away sooner than expected due to the loss of income and what that would mean for keeping up with mortgage payments.

They were also worried about the cost of monthly payments for a term life insurance plan since they both had a high BMI. They had heard this could have an effect on their premium and knew their best chance of getting affordable coverage would be to contact a broker like us.

We looked at a number of options for this couple and were able to provide them with an option that met their budget and goal to cover a 30 year mortgage.

There are many couples out there with the financial burden of a 30 year mortgage. Why not get peace of mind in knowing if anything happens to you, the mortgage payments will still be made on time and your loved one won’t lose your home.

We can’t guarantee we can secure a fixed term life insurance product for every applicant, but do our best to give you the best chance at quality coverage by shopping among a number of providers.

Income Replacement with High BMI

A gentleman called us a few months ago to find out about getting a 20 year term life insurance plan to cover his income. He had recently gotten a raise at work thanks to a promotion and he wanted to ensure his new income would be covered to protect his wife and kids should he pass away sooner than expected.

The only problem was this client had a high BMI, which sometimes can cause rate increases or even a declined application.

We looked at a number of options and found a plan that met this client’s goals and budget. He was very pleased with the outcome and grateful to have peace of mind in knowing his family wouldn’t have to struggle financially should anything happen to him.

We work hard to find the best coverage for our clients, but can’t guarantee coverage for every applicant. If you have a high BMI, get in touch to see what you might qualify for.

If you’re curious what your monthly rate might be, why not get a no obligation quote from one of our friendly brokers. Simply call us at  (888) 626-0439 or send us a message using the contact us box found on this page.

Guaranteed Issue Plan

These are the last chance options available. It depends on what your age and health are and what the other options would say.

Guaranteed Issue is an option that I don’t want to lead with. It depends on the overall perspective of the client. But guaranteed issue doesn’t ask any health questions.

What it does do is force you to wait two full years for the coverage to come into effect. These are the types of plans you’ll see on TV that Alex Trebek endorses. It’s better to try to find some kind of first-day full coverage before going this route.

Accidental Life Insurance Plan

An Accidental Life Insurance coverage may be worth considering. I mentioned earlier about my high BMI client who was able to get life insurance. There are many accidental death plans that do not ask health questions. Even if they do, they’re minimal.

They typically don’t consider height and weight in their determination. Say that you’re not eligible for a large amount of life insurance coverage through term or whole life insurance. You may want to consider an accidental death policy. It’s certainly better than nothing.

You can get several hundred thousand dollars, usually for an inexpensive price. It’s well worth it if you’re running up against problems getting life insurance issued.

Stories from the field

My father used to work in the life insurance business. When he retired he passed on a number of clients to me. Mr. Smith was one of those clients – a client that left an indelible impression on me. Mr. Smith was 85 years old, an age at which most people have stopped thinking about getting life insurance in place, but not Mr. Smith.

My father had written a nice policy for him a number of years prior and soon after Mr. Smith, at the age of 84, had remarried. He wanted to ensure he left enough money behind to not only his wife, but also his kids when he passed away and thus the interest in additional coverage.

When I sat down with Mr. Smith he was quick to admit he was not in the best of health. He had experienced a number of strokes a few years prior and taking a heavy cardiovascular medicine to treat and prevent any further complications.

I wasn’t certain we would be able to provide Mr. Smith with any further coverage, given his health, but said I would do my best and went away to have a look at our different providers.

Ultimately I was able to find first day, full coverage at a price he could afford. He was elated when I gave him a call and told him the news. He’d fully expected to be declined or receive a quote for a premium that would be more than he could afford.

Six months later I got a call that Mr. Smith had passed away. Within a short period of time we got confirmation that no foul play had taken place and that the life insurance policy would pay as described. His children and wife received a substantial payout thanks to his coverage being in effect from day one. Not all life insurance policies work like this.

Many agents claim to offer quality coverage, but the underlying truth is that coverage doesn’t go into effect for 2 to 3 years after the policy is taken out, leaving client’s loved ones totally stranded financially should they pass away within that period of time.

This experience with Mr. Smith reminded me how important it is to get first day coverage whenever possible. And it is a lesson I pass on to every client I work with.

Other health issues affecting insurability

There’s one more point to consider when you’re searching for life insurance with high BMI.

If you have other corresponding health elements, you may face more difficulty in applying for any kind of life insurance.

That’s not to say that you can’t get life insurance. Just expect a little bit more difficulty in the application process.

Factors that have the biggest impact on your eligibility for insurance with high BMI include the following:

  • smoking
  • diabetes
  • diabetic complications
  • high blood pressure
  • heart issues
  • medication usage
  • cancer history
And so on. All of these issues will have various levels of impact on your level of insurability.

Factors that have the biggest impact on your eligibility for life insurance with high BMI

I don’t want to sound like a Debbie Downer, but I do want to shoot you straight. It’s important to know your facts and understand what you can expect. But I don’t want this to deter you from at least trying to get life insurance.

I can’t tell you the number of people out there that put off buying life insurance for years. They were convinced that their ailment was uninsurable. But they could get coverage.

It just takes a little bit more practice. A little bit more talent from the working agent to find that coverage for the client.

They are glad that they got it, whilst simultaneously being frustrated that they didn’t do it any sooner!
