There Is A False Perception That, Just Because You Use Tobacco Products, You’ll Be Rated Much Higher Or Maybe Not Even Be Accepted At All
Now, this is not the case when you work with an independent agent. The question is:
Who’s going to give you the lowest rate? And the truth is the independent agent with access to 10-15 companies is the guy that’s going to do it for you.
Here’s An Overview Of Today’s Topics:
What are the things you should be concerned about if you smoke? First of all, if you smoke cigarettes, you’re going to be rated as a smoker. Again, some companies rate high for smoking, some companies rate low. Talk to your independent agent and have them shop around who’s going to give you the best smoker rates. Many of the companies can vary dramatically in pricing, and you want to make sure you’re working with one who’s going to give you the best deal.
Secondly, understand there’s very few companies that will actually consider e-cigarette usage as non-smoking. The catch here is that you can’t have smoked a cigarette within the last 12 months. If you use e-cigs, in some cases, companies are only concerned about actual cigarettes.
Again, this is something that’s hard for a regular person that doesn’t have insurance experience to figure out. However, if you work with an independent agent, they’ll know who will be more flexible and want the business at a non-smoking rate, even if you’re just using e-cigarettes, whereas most companies would count it as smoking rates.
The third situation is smoking cigars. If you smoke a cigar, many insurance companies will write you at a smoker rate. However, sometimes cigar smokers don’t experience nearly the same amount of health problems as a cigarette smoker over the length of their life. There are a select few companies that will rate you as a non-smoker, even if you smoke a cigar daily, five times a day, or whatever.

Again, work with your independent agent. They know who can do it and who can’t and will be able to find you a good deal. If you chew or you dip, same rule applies. Many companies will give you preferred coverage at a tobacco rate if all you do is chew the occasional Skol.
